September Match of the Month

September Match of the Month

Hi and welcome to September’s MOTM voting. It has always been the case but anything that lands on VOD in September but was recorded beforehand counts towards MOTM. Hence you’ll see a few matches from the tail end of August included here. In previous months I’ve been able to use my votes to break up ties. Given the range of matches voted for here I haven’t been able to do that. So we’ve got a definitive winner and then a couple of draws. For off though; here are the nominated matches in chronological order:

August 27: Chris Brookes & Timothy Thatcher vs. Aussie Open (PROGRESS)

August 31: Absolute Andy vs. Zack Sabre Jr (wXw)

August 31: WALTER & Timothy Thatcher vs. David Starr & Ilja Dragunov (wXw)

September 1: Jun Akiyama & Atsushi Aoki vs. Takashi Sugiura & Daisuke Harada (NOAH)

September 2: Shuji Kondo & Koji Doi vs. T-Hawk & El Lindman (Wrestle-1)

September 6: ANTIAS vs. MaxiMum, BxB Hulk & YAMATO (Dragon Gate)

September 7: Tomohiro Ishii & Will Ospreay vs. Golden Lovers (NJPW)

September 7: Jay Lethal vs. Jonathan Gresham (ROH)

September 7: Flamita vs. Bandido (Rev Pro)

September 8: WALTER & Timothy Thatcher vs. Chris Brookes & Jonathan Gresham (Rev Pro)

September 15: Kenny Omega vs. Tomohiro Ishii (NJPW)

September 16: AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe (WWE)

September 16: Seth Rollins & Dean Ambrose vs. Dolph Ziggler & Drew McIntyre (WWE)

September 19: Pete Dunne vs. Ricochet (NXT)

September 21: Ryota Nakatsu vs. Naoki Tanizaki (BASARA)

September 23: Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Kazuchika Okada (NJPW)

September 24: Mayu Iwatani vs. Utami Hayashishita (Stardom)

September 27: Toni Storm vs. Meiko Satomura (EVE)

September 28: Jay Lethal vs. Will Ospreay (ROH)

September 30: Kazuchika Okada & Tomohiro Ishii vs. Golden Lovers (NJPW)

Which resulted in a Top 5 as voted for by myself (@arnold furious) and my team at RVR; @aqeelkhalid, @theianhamilton and @trinidadchainz. Each of us voting for a top three.

=4.  Ringkampf vs. Ilja Dragunov & David Starr/Ringkampf vs. Chris Brookes & Jonathan Gresham.

There was no separating the Eurozone’s two best Ringkampf tag matches this month. With them due to appear in wXw’s World Tag Team League we may see more of the same in October. I think I marginally preferred the Ilja/Starr match but both are worth a look.

=2. Dragon Gate ten-man tag/Pete Dunne vs. Ricochet

Two wildly different matches. One pitting five grapplers against five rivals. The other a straight up one-on-one. Proof of both the variety in pro wrestling styles and match types.

  1. Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Kazuchika Okada

After Omega/Ishii didn’t deliver to the degree we were expecting us at figured it might be the month where something outside of New Japan would win MOTM. But then old man Tanahashi came strolling down from his mountain on high, glorious barnet blowing in the breeze, intent at one last gun-slinging run at the top. Age, knees and disbelief be damned. Another outstanding match, in a string of them, against Okada and proof that New Japan can tell the same story exactly reversed only a few years apart with the same players and still make me believe in the underdog.

It being so close, with everyone clustered together after the top spot, some other matches you may want to take a gander at…

Golden Lovers vs. CHAOS. Whether at Korakuen Hall on a nothing throwaway Road to show or headlining Los Angeles it’s a good time to be had by all.

WWE put on their best PPV of the year this month!

Finally; Utami Hayashishita. Who? Exactly. No cagematch profile. No wrestling matches until August of this year. A born professional wrestler. An absolute natural. A genuine threat to Ronda Rousey for Rookie of the Year. Stardom’s latest find smashed her way through the opposition and, against all odds, found herself in the 5Star Grand Prix final this year against the company’s ace Mayu Iwatani. Get on board now so you can tell your friends about her in a few months when that end of year voting gets intense.
