What a year 2017 was for great matches. Kazuchika Okada had a whole bunch of them but he had so many great ones that it split his votes. Instead sneaking into top spot was the sublime and visceral Dragunov vs. WALTER from wXw’s 16 Carat Gold final. One of the most barbaric matches ever seen contested within the rules of pro-wrestling, WALTER destroyed Dragunov with chops. Ilja’s mentality when it comes to wrestling is that he wants to get so fucked up he cannot function properly afterwards. He is a lunatic but his heart-felt performance in Oberhausen, culminating in a speech where he promised to go home to his wife and newly born son, gave me chills. There are many great wrestlers but only a few that transcend wrestling. Ilja Dragunov is one of those men. And WALTER has had the best year of his career, littered with sensational wrestling matches. The Dragunov one stands out, even above the ***** bout with Zack Sabre Jr in PWG. It is Rearviewreviews.com’s Match of the Year.
