NXT Notes January 30, 2019

Post-TakeOver episodes of NXT always follow the same format. Two matches, recorded in front of the TakeOver crowds, and a bunch of recaps and post-match interviews. The two matches tonight are Street Profits versus Forgotten Sons, and Kairi Sane & Io Shirai versus Jessamyn Duke & Marina Shafir.

Notes

After the overview of the NXT TakeOver Phoenix results and highlights, the women’s division tag opened the show.

Io Shirai & Kairi Sane vs Jessamyn Duke & Marina Shafir

Mauro Ranallo was calling Sane and Shirai The Sky Pirates. It appeared on WWE.com as well, which could indicate it’s a longer-term arrangement. Marina Shafir was wearing a protective mask as she broke her nose in December.

Shirai and Shafir started the match and Shafir had no answer to the speed and skill of Io Shirai. She quickly tagged out, as did Shirai, and Sane and Duke came in.

Jessamyn Duke has to be a foot taller than Kairi Sane, something she chose to highlight by offering Sane a test of strength she clearly couldn’t reach. Sane wasn’t bothered, she just chopped her instead. Sane proved she wasn’t scared to go strike for strike with Duke, and Jessamyn Duke was already in trouble by the time Kairi Sane tagged Shirai in for some double teaming.

Double knees in the corner from Shirai had Duke rolling out of the ring, but Marina Shafir got in Shirai’s way as she tried to follow, and the distraction gave Duke chance to take advantage.

Shafir and Duke kept Shirai under control for a while, but she eventually made it back to Kairi Sane for the tag. Sane was so fired up when she got in, Marina Shafir didn’t stand a chance. In fact, Sane turned Shafir’s one attempt at offence into a spear.

Io Shirai knocked Duke off the apron then Sane and Shirai used the assisted elbow drop they used last time as part of their finish. This time, instead of the assisted moonsault, Shirai landed a suicide dive onto Jessamyn Duke to keep her out of the way while Kairi Sane delivered the InSane Elbow to Marina Shafir for the win.

Johnny Gargano versus Ricochet was the first recap of the night with a post-match interview with Gargano, clearly taken before TakeOver finished.

He said he’d promised the people a match of the year and he delivered. He also promised he’d win, and he did. Johnny TakeOver won. Johnny TakeOver is the new NXT North American Champion and winning feels great. He loves it.

Half Time Heat is happening this Sunday (during half-time in the Superbowl funnily enough, whatever the hell time that is). It will feature a six-man tag match – Ricochet, Aleister Black, and Velveteen Dream versus Tommaso Ciampa, Johnny Gargano, and Adam Cole. The explanation for the match is later if you haven’t already seen the footage.

Shayna Baszler’s successful title defence against Bianca Belair was recapped next. Belair got the post-match interview. She said being undefeated is a mindset, not a record. She just had her first TakeOver match and the title was I her fingertips. Baszler knows that one day Belair is going to take that title off her and she’s still un-de-fea-ted.

She was also asked about the gross comments made by Sam Roberts on the TakeOver Pre-show, about Belair not being TakeOver ready and her title challenge being a ‘waste of a match’. Bianca Belair said she just took Shayna Baszler to her limits so ‘Mr Sam’ can kiss her ass. I think that’s fair enough.

War Raiders took the post-match interview after the recap of them becoming the new NXT Tag Team Champions. They said they came and did exactly what they said they were going to do. Undisputed ERA have earned their respect but their era has ended. The war is here, the raid has begun, the War Raiders reign starts now.

Kyle O'Reilly and Roderick Strong with the High Low on Hanson

Matt Riddle versus Kassius Ohno was the penultimate recap of the night. Matt Riddle was asked how satisfying the victory was. He said it wasn’t about the victory, he’s beaten Ohno twice before but Ohno kept coming back. In this match, he made a point. He didn’t use a submission or knock him out, he beat Ohno until he tapped. He made him give up. He broke Kassius Ohno and he’ll break anyone else who tries to test him.

The final recap of the night was for the NXT Championship match between Tommaso Ciampa and Aleister Black. They showed Ciampa and Gargano standing together, and a tweet from Paul Heyman praising Ciampa and Triple H. Then they showed the post-TakeOver brawl that broke out between Velveteen Dream, Ricochet, & Aleister Black, and Tommaso Ciampa, Johnny Gargano, & Adam Cole, which led to the Half Time Heat announcement by Shawn Michaels at Royal Rumble.

Post TakeOver brawl Velveteen Dream, Ricochet, and Aleister Black vs Adam Cole Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa

Before the main event, there was an ad for the Worlds Collide Tournament coming up on Saturday and featuring NXT, NXT UK, and 205 Live. We also got a run through of which NXT superstars appeared at the Royal Rumble, and it was announced that Johnny Gargano will be on next week’s show.

Street Profits vs Forgotten Sons

Street Profits wanted to make it completely clear they were unhappy about Forgotten Sons attacking them, and Angelo Dawkins piled into Steve Cutler immediately. Cutler managed to tag in, but Montez Ford rushed in to neutralise the numbers advantage and it all broke down for a moment. Ford hit Cutler until he rolled out of the ring, then tipped Blake out onto him.

Cutler got dropped onto Blake when he got back in the ring, then tipped out of the other side. But Ford was too pleased with himself and got levelled by Blake. Forgotten Sons kept Montez Ford isolated for a while, and he took a lot of punishment while he was trapped on the wrong side of the ring. Dawkins had to come in and make the save at one point.

Ford managed to throw both Forgotten Sons out of the ring, and avoid a splash from Wesley Blake, and finally got to Angelo Dawkins. Dawkins came in and took on Blake and Cutler. When they started to come back at him a miraculously revived Ford hurled himself over the top rope onto Cutler while Dawkins speared Blake in the ring. It was close, but he only got a two count.

Street Profits take down Wesley Blake

An absolutely decisive finisher to Wesley Blake, in the form of a neckbreaker from the electric chair, was broken up by Cutler. Dawkins was dragged out of the ring by Cutler and when Ford rebounded off the ropes to fly in and save his partner Jaxon Ryker got involved by pulling the top rope down and sending Ford sprawling out of the ring then levelled him.

Angelo Dawkins walked towards Ryker, fixated on him to the point he didn’t see the suicide dive from Blake until he was sent crashing into the barricade by it.

With Ford still on the floor, Blake and Cutler double teamed Dawkins and got the pin.

Final word

Two good matches and a nice recap of a good TakeOver. The new round of tapings took place tonight, so we’ll see what they throw up over the next few weeks.
