TOP FIVE:

5. Young Bucks vs. Lucha Bros (AEW Double or Nothing)

I was not at all hyped for Double or Nothing but there’s no escaping the success of the show. While the main event was overshadowed somewhat by this match. The Bucks putting on their brand of exciting tag team wrestling against one of the other best teams at that style. It was very spot heavy but it worked.

4. T-Hawk vs. Shuji Kondo (Wrestle-1 Triumph)

I loved this fucking match. Two guys just beating the hell out of each other. T-Hawk has been sensational since he followed CIMA out of Dragon Gate. He seemed to lose his mojo in DG but it’s back now in a big way. The Strong Hearts invasion of Wrestle-1 continues to be one of the most intriguing angles in wrestling. The undercard bouts are banging right now too.

3. El Phantasmo vs. Rocky Romero (NJPW Best of the Super Juniors)

BOSJ3ELP

ELP had a charisma laden BOSJ tour that totally made him in front of a new crowd. His in-ring was very solid but it was compounded by excellent character work. He finally got his comeuppance against Romero, who’d played an underdog role in the tournament and also had a great match with Will Ospreay in a similar, yet more sporting, vein.

2. Shingo Takagi vs. Dragon Lee (NJPW Best of the Super Juniors)

WKShingo

I honestly thought this would be the best match in BOSJ this year. It absolutely killed. Incredible work from both guys and yet the final was even better! Shingo used this tournament to demonstrate how consistently good he can be and I’m sure New Japan officials were paying attention.

1. Dustin Rhodes vs. Cody (AEW Double or Nothing)

AEW1mother

This match guys! On paper there was nothing to it but they pulled together all manner of historical angles, familiarity and effort to make it work in a big way. Cody is aware of his strengths in wrestling and it’s all about storytelling for him. They kept the workrate remarkably high considering Dustin’s ages and the buckets of blood he bled in this contest. AEW’s show was a huge success and this match was one of the main reasons why.
