April 26: Charli Evans vs. Tito (EVE)

April 28: Naoya Nomura vs. Suwama (AJPW)

April 29: Kento Miyahara vs. Jake Lee (AJPW)

What a month! Votes came from @theIanHamilton, @trinidadchainz, @AqeelKhalid and myself @arnoldfurious. Here is our top five for April 2019:

  1. Charli Evans vs. Tito (EVE We’re All Gonna Die!)

Wrestling is a remarkable thing. Where a feud can develop between a wrestler and an inanimate object and capture the hearts and minds of wrestling fans. I have not seen this particular match but one member of our panel gave this top spot in an incredibly crowded month. You have to respect the hustle. I am considering switching my #1 to Chris Brookes vs. Logan Easton LaRoux.

  1. Dylan James vs. Yuji Okabayashi (AJPW Champion Carnival)

Champion Carnival was a long, grueling tournament and what better match to represent it than James vs. Okabayashi? A thirty minute long, grueling, hard-fought draw with two guys just beating the shit out of each other. What a war this was! Okabayashi’s credentials were well known coming into CC but Dylan James, formally James Raideen in Zero1, has made a name for himself with performances like this. Watch out for him, if this is anything to go by he’s going to be a major player in All Japan.

  1. Minoru Suzuki vs. Josh Barnett (GCW Presents Bloodsport)

Bloodsport was a resounding success of a show and it was highlighted by this ridiculous war between Suzuki and Barnett. April was a really good month for broadways huh? Suzuki had a perfectly good match at last year’s Bloodsport show against Matt Riddle but he clearly enjoyed himself and his return match was everything we were all hoping for. A few niggles regarding rule infringements aside it was hard hitting, intense and unforgettable. No wonder it’s still here at the end of the month as one of the best. Aqeel has only just changed his name back from BLOODSPORT!

  1. Kento Miyahara vs. Jake Lee (AJPW Champion Carnival)

While I don’t personally agree that this was the best match from CC (maybe top five) the other guys enjoyed it more. Jake Lee has come of age. He was outshone by Naoya Nomura in their Block, especially in a banging final match against Suwama, but come the final, come the man. Jake Lee showing a nasty streak to take it to the Ace of All Japan. He came up short but the booking of CC has seen several new stars emerge and AJPW’s future looks bright indeed.

  1. War Raiders vs. Ricochet & Aleister Black (NXT Takeover)

Judging by the reaction at the time in the RVR group chat it’s not a surprise this came out on top of the voting. The quality of everything else on Takeover is debatable depending on your perspective but everyone loved this match. It was high paced, difficult and a superb send off to two guys in Ricochet and Black who are now destined to be global stars in every sense of the word. Both heading to the, so-called, greener pastures of the main roster. I’ve said this many, many times but Black’s gimmick and style should make him a ‘can’t miss’ prospect and Ricochet’s insane athleticism makes him an automatic stand-out on the main roster. They got to say goodbye to NXT here but the world of WWE should be loaded with fun matches and feuds for both for years to come. Unless Vince loses interest. Who knows?

Aleister Black stomps onto a pile of War Raiders and Ricochet
